Replacing Sen. Ron Rice as chair of the legislative Black Caucus is a task from which many have shied away. Enter Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-Passaic), a bit more diplomatic and bridge-building as a lawmaker than Rice, who has been an often acerbic but potent voice for Black people in New Jersey. Rice (D-Essex) will remain a senior adviser to the caucus.
