There have been 12 homicides in Trenton so far this year, four of them this month alone. The capital city is still reeling from two fatal shootings on Monday. The surge in violence comes as a new police director takes the helm. Among his first initiatives, police director Steve Wilson said creating a task force to combat violence in the city is a priority as well as putting an emphasis on community policing.

Mayor Reed Gusciora said that with the increase in gang violence in the city he wanted someone in the position who was vested in the neighborhood and community policing.
