Trauma’s Tragedy and Treatment: The million-dollar quarterback

Trauma’s Tragedy and Treatment is a five-part series that explores how childhood trauma can impact a person for decades to come. The series delves into how Newark is trying to become a trauma-informed city by 2020.

The second installment of the series highlights living conditions in Newark’s South Ward district and their impact on children. In 2015, the district had an unemployment rate of 31 percent and 56 percent of children lived below the poverty level, according to the South Ward Children’s Alliance. What programs and services are available to help children in the district thrive?

Correspondent Michael Hill reported this story with the support of the Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism, a program of the University of Southern California Center for Health Journalism.
