Tornadoes damage homes in Essex and Ocean counties, three people injured

There were 12 tornado warnings in New Jersey on Thursday

Dangerous thunderstorms ripped through the area Thursday night and at least three tornadoes touched down briefly in Essex and Ocean counties. More confirmations are expected as surveys continue, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado destroyed a home in Verona. Winds reached 65 miles per hour and knocked down several trees and large limbs. In Long Beach Island, three people were injured and at least 35 homes were damaged.

There were 12 tornado warnings across the state, covering Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Essex and Hunterdon counties.
