The essential school workers who feel largely ignored during COVID-19 crisis

Kakinda Gordon, a custodian with the Bridgewater-Raritan School District, says that when it comes to COVID-19 risks and in-person learning, much of the focus has been on students and teachers, to the point of other essential school workers being ignored. “We’re definitely not compensated for the risk part of the job,” she said.

Anyi Imbajoa, a custodian with the Flemington School District, said that at the peak of the pandemic, no amount of personal protective equipment could calm her nerves.

While most full-time support staff like Gordon and Imbajoa have union representation and health insurance, part-time workers may not. Correspondent Raven Santana reports.
