The big changes in store for Edna Mahan prison

A federal monitor would oversee compliance with prisoner protections, other new requirements at NJ’s only prison for women

For years, inmates at the state’s only women’s prison complained about a culture of sexual and physical abuse. Now the New Jersey Department of Corrections is agreeing to strict federal oversight to help protect them.

It was an expected move after a federal investigation found top decision-makers turned a blind eye to the conditions at the prison.
