State leaders urged to plan ahead to preserve essential bus services

Regional Plan Association report finds about three-quarters of bus riders are considered essential

NJ Transit has projected that it will need an infusion of more than $1 billion to make up for losses during the coronavirus pandemic. Against that backdrop, the Regional Plan Association is calling on state leaders to prepare so that essential bus services are not cut and fares not increased.

Transit agency statistics show that essential workers — many of them Black and Latinx — ride buses in high numbers and depend on a well-functioning system. Correspondent Leah Mishkin reports.
