Restaurants face challenge with indoor dining limits in winter

Governor says increasing capacity at a time when numbers are spiking would send mixed message

Bars and restaurants in Hoboken are the latest to be hit with a curfew. Mayor Ravi Bhalla issued an executive order Tuesday calling for businesses to close by midnight starting Thursday, Oct 29. In Newark, all businesses were ordered to close by 8 p.m., starting on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Such measures are a tough blow, especially for restaurant owners still trying to get back on their feet with just a few months’ worth of outdoor dining revenue behind them. The latest restrictions suggest that a state-approved increase on indoor dining limits is likely not coming soon. How will restaurants survive once the cold weather rolls in?
