Pause on J&J shots slows some vaccination programs, heightens skepticism

As Johnson & Johnson’s paused COVID-19 vaccine awaits judgment in the U.S. due to rare but severe side effects, some New Jersey vaccination programs that depended on the “one-and-done” dose have also put their vaccination outreach on hold.

It’s painful: The City of Trenton’s stash of almost 2,000 Johnson & Johnson doses might expire by this weekend, before a federal decision on whether to resume use of the vaccine. Other programs have substituted Moderna or Pfizer vaccines and not missed a beat. A decision on whether the benefits of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine outweigh the risks is expected Friday.
