NJ’s Indian community sends aid as India’s COVID-19 crisis worsens

India is now the global epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. An estimated 3,000 people are dying there daily, many of them in hospital beds, unable to get access to life-saving oxygen. Less than 2% of India’s population has been vaccinated.

The tragedy there is deeply felt in New Jersey, home to some 400,000 residents of Indian descent, the third-largest population of any state in the U.S. Several relief efforts are underway here, from a GoFundMe page to help raise money for food to the Edison chapter of the global Punjabi Chamber of Commerce tackling the oxygen shortage.
