Gov. Phil Murphy warned the pandemic “is going to get worse” as one holiday gathering after another makes a recipe for further disaster. Murphy reiterated what business owners don’t want to hear this time of year: Everything is on the table in terms of a full shutdown.
The governor does have some optimism to lean on as Pfizer announced that it’s applying to the FDA for emergency use authorization for its new vaccine that’s reportedly 95% effective. Murphy says if approved, New Jersey could get its first shipment of roughly 130,000 doses around Christmas.
The state reported more sobering numbers Friday with 3,635 new positive COVID-19 test results for a total of 297,370 cases. New Jersey reports 23 more confirmed COVID-19-related fatalities, putting the total confirmed and probable deaths at 16,712. As of Thursday night, 2,505 patients were admitted to New Jersey’s hospitals for COVID-19 illnesses.
