Strong words from Gov. Phil Murphy Thursday as he quashed rumors and said New Jersey’s schools are not closing.

The governor painted a grim picture of the coronavirus spreading in the Garden State. The state Health Department reported 2,517 new positive cases Thursday. Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said if we continue on this pace, the state will be back where it was in the spring. The cumulative number of positive cases is now 266,986. With 18 additional deaths, there are now 16,495 total fatalities since the start of the pandemic.

The governor also announced a coalition of seven states — New Jersey plus all six New England states — that will prohibit interstate youth hockey games and tournaments in the face of the virus’ second wave. He also mentioned getting a new rapid test from the federal government that is 99% accurate with results in 20 minutes.
