Sobering words from the CDC claim “the war has changed” in the COVID-19 pandemic. Internal documents show delta infections are more contagious, likely to cause more severe disease and spread as easily as chickenpox. The CDC is also releasing what’s being called a “pivotal discovery” on the health crisis. Data shows that even vaccinated people can spread the more transmissible delta strain — likely adding to the surge of infections being seen across the country. The study shows delta produces similar amounts of virus in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people if they get infected, but experts say being fully vaccinated makes it less likely that you’ll get sick from COVID. Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday said, at least for now, he’s not escalating his decision to strongly recommend, rather than mandate, an indoor masking requirement.

Friday, officials announced 964 new, positive cases and 6 new deaths. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 906,271 cases in the state and 26,595 confirmed and probable deaths.
