A mob of pro-Trump extremists, egged on by the president’s false claims of voter fraud, pushed through barricades and stormed into the Capitol complex Wednesday afternoon. Inside and under lockdown, members of Congress crouched under chairs and desks and were handed gas masks before fleeing for safety.
The rioters temporarily paralyzed what should have been a standard event: the tallying of Electoral College votes. Congress did get back to work in the hours just before dawn to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez was inside the Capitol as the riot was unfolding. He joins Anchor Briana Vannozzi to share his experience.
