Massive backlog of passport applications upends people’s travel plans

If you apply for a passport now, you'll probably get it by Thanksgiving

Anyone looking to travel abroad should check the expiration date on their passport first. There’s a nationwide backlog in processing passport applications and renewals due to a staffing shortage at the U.S. Department of State — and a massive rush of people looking to make up for a year of lost travel. A process that used to take weeks could now take several months.

“We are trying to get the word out to people to let them know that if you are planning to travel and you need a passport or a passport renewal you would need to get one with at least five months’ advanced planning,” said Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello.
