Lawmakers push for new Department of Corrections commissioner

A human rights crisis — that’s how some lawmakers are describing what’s taking place at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, the state’s only all-female prison, where an investigation is underway following allegations of a disturbing assault on inmates in January and years of allegations of abuse.

New allegations surfaced Wednesday from one inmate who says she was injured again after coming forward. There’s a growing chorus demanding the resignation of Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks; the state Senate passed a bipartisan resolution calling for his removal. Correspondent Leah Mishkin reports.
