Jon Bon Jovi opens new Soul Kitchen restaurant at Rutgers-Newark

Jersey rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his wife opened the newest JBJ Soul Kitchen — the first on a college campus. The pay-it-forward restaurant aims to combat the food insecurity which can haunt one in three college students.

Rutgers food service provider Gourmet Dining worked with the couple to design a campus restaurant that would work with their card swipe student meal program. The result: A 50-seat facility based on the Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchens in Red Bank and Toms River — which have served more than 100,000 meals.

At the new facility, students who can pay the $12 minimum fee. Those who can’t, may volunteer their time at the restaurant. And nobody knows which diner paid for their meal.

The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and has halal and kosher options.
