How medical students are helping some school districts to navigate COVID-19

Union City is one of several school districts getting the students' help to make sense of health department and CDC guidance

With data from the Department of Education showing that 122 COVID-19 cases are linked to 28 school outbreaks, school districts are on guard. At least 50 schools have paused in-person learning due to a student or staff member becoming infected. Cherry Hill and Hawthorne are among the latest. Keeping track of the safety protocols is an entirely other challenge.

Union City is one of 12 school districts tapping the expertise of students at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine through a program called Support our Schools. The students meet with district representatives once a week by Zoom. This week’s topic was athletics, and how to safely operate sports in the fall and winter months. Correspondent Joanna Gagis reports.
