The swimming area at Spruce Run Reservoir’s state park is fenced and closed off to swimmers because of persistent Harmful Algal Blooms, or HABs, in the water.
Tests have already found similar harmful blooms in other New Jersey lakes and ponds, too, this year. They’re caused by waste and fertilizer in stormwater runoff that feeds the blooms — and higher temperatures, which promote their growth. Contributing factors include climate change and global warming that spawn more storms and heat waves.
