Hackensack Meridian Health develops test to track and diagnose coronavirus variants

New Jersey health leaders say that, even in a best-case scenario, the state will experience a couple more weeks of steady COVID-19 infection rates. The biggest concern: rising coronavirus variants spreading through communities. Department of Health data shows more than 750 cases of seven mutant strains have been detected here, and experts say that without proper testing, the strains are likely much more prevalent than we know.

Hackensack Meridian Health’s Center for Discovery and Innovation is hoping that a new rapid test will help. It can pinpoint the highly contagious strains in an individual within 2 1/2 half hours. Dr. David Perlin is the chief scientific officer at the center and joins us with the latest.
