Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday that he will nominate attorney Rachel Wainer Apter to be the next associate justice on the state Supreme Court. Wainer Apter, who is director of the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights, previously worked as a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and started her career as a clerk for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Murphy’s pick would fill the seat of Justice Jaynee LaVecchia, who announced last week that she will retire at the end of August.
Wainer Apter is Murphy’s second pick to the state Supreme Court in less than a year. His first selection was Fabiana Pierre-Louis, who became the state’s first Black female justice.
