Gov. Murphy announces investigation into assault allegations at Edna Mahan

Gov. Phil Murphy ordered former state comptroller Matt Boxer to investigate allegations of violence at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women. The governor said he is sickened by the horrific allegations of women being beaten, and said he is sticking by Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks, who has placed some staff members on leave.

Several lawmakers have called for Hicks and the warden at the prison to be placed on leave. The facility has been in the headlines the last couple of years. A report by the federal Department of Justice described sexual abuse of the inmates as an open secret.
