Four-day Transplant Games held at American Dream mall

Organizers said they hope such events will encourage more people to register as transplant donors

After being postponed last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 Transplant Games of America took place at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, with tens of thousands of organ recipients and donors participating. The four-day event, July 16-19, was hosted in partnership with the NJ Sharing Network, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, University Hospital and the Meadowlands Chamber.

Organizers said that of the more than 115,000 people awaiting a transplant nationwide, about 4,000 are in New Jersey. Officials for the Michigan-based Transplant Life Foundation, which hosted the Transplant Games, said they hope such events will encourage more people to register as transplant donors, potentially gifting someone else a second chance at life.
