First Black woman and civilian to lead Jersey City Police Department

A big shift is coming to one of the state’s largest police forces

For the first time, a Black woman will take over the Jersey City Police Department and oversee all of the roughly 1,000 officers.

Tawana Moody is being tapped to take over operations following Police Chief Mike Kelly’s retirement. She’s also making history for other reasons: Moody is the first civilian to hold the job. Joanna Gagis reports.
