Family of Maurice Gordon Jr. suing the state after fatal shooting last May

Last May, a Black man named Maurice Gordon Jr. was fatally shot by a New Jersey state trooper during a routine traffic stop on the Garden State Parkway and the family’s attorney, William Wagstaff, says they still don’t know the entire circumstances of the 28-year-old’s final moments.

Gordon’s family is now suing the state, alleging that race was a factor in his death, which came two days before George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, setting off nationwide demonstrations over police brutality. Wagstaff has called for the appointment of an independent prosecutor since New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal is named in the civil case.
