Voter turnout in New Jersey has been trending downward for years. Fewer residents voted in the June primary than in the last gubernatorial primary four years ago; the turnout was just 19% in June.
It’s unclear whether the low level of interest will be mirrored in the November election. At least one race that’s already heated is in South Jersey’s 2nd District, where a Senate seat is up for grabs after Republican Sen. Chris Brown decided to not seek reelection. Democratic Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, who’s vying with former GOP state Assemblyman Vince Polistina for the seat, goes on the record.
