Ciattarelli still favored in GOP governor race. Trump still looms over the contest

New Jersey GOP faces identity check in 2021 primary

As Republicans head into next week’s primary election, four candidates are vying for the GOP nomination to face Gov. Phil Murphy in the general election this fall.

Former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli is still the favorite in this race; he announced back in January 2020 and has the support of the party establishment. Ciattarelli’s so-so Trump cred has provided an opening for Trump acolyte Hirsh Singh, which has forced Ciattarelli to pivot to the right. There are two other candidates in this race, conservative Pastor Phil Rizzo and former Somerset County Commissioner Brian Levine. And the presence of Donald Trump still looms over the contest.
