Calls for ouster of corrections commissioner after alleged assault at women’s prison

Advocates want a federal takeover of the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women

In a scathing press conference, advocates and legislative leaders demanded that Gov. Phil Murphy suspend state Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks and allow for a federal takeover at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women.

It follows the alleged beating of several inmates at the facility on Jan. 11. Three corrections officers were charged for their role in the alleged attack. Legislators said they alerted the Department of Corrections about one of the officers, a “known abuser,” last August but the department failed to act.

The alleged attack is just the latest in a pattern of abuse despite legislative reforms spurred by a 2020 federal Department of Justice investigation of the facility.

The Department of Corrections and Governor’s Office did not return NJ Spotlight News’ request for comment.
