Business Report: Gas tax, sports betting, casino jobs

On Oct. 1, New Jersey will have one of the highest gas taxes in the country

If you didn’t fill your car’s gas tank today, get ready for some sticker shock come Oct. 1 when the state’s new higher gas tax takes effect. The tax increases by 9.3 cents a gallon, to 50.7 cents. That means New Jersey will have one of the highest gas taxes in the country. New Jersey’s gas tax has gone up more than 36 cents in the past five years.

Caesars Entertainment, the largest casino operator, agreed to acquire sportsbook operator William Hill for $3.7 billion. Caesars called sports betting and online gaming “one of the largest areas of growth for the U.S. gaming industry.” William Hill operates the sports book in the Tropicana in Atlantic City.

Employment in Atlantic City’s casinos is nowhere near the levels previously seen. According to the Division of Gaming Enforcement, more than 22,000 people worked in the casinos as of August, down 21% over last year’s numbers.

Roseland-based ADP reported Wednesday that companies across the country added 749,000 new jobs in September. That was stronger than economists expected.
