Bridging the gap between NJ communities and police

Events in Newark and Jersey City were part of National Night Out

Residents in Newark and Jersey City got a chance to spend quality time with their neighbors as well as those committed to serving and protecting them. The events Tuesday were part of a National Night Out aimed at bridging the gap between communities and law enforcement; they had been canceled last year amid the pandemic and during a critical moment of social justice protest nationwide.

Creating a link between communities and police is an important issue in cities like Newark, where a federal consent decree forced the city to reform its police department after excessive constitutional violations. Jersey City, which underwent its own series of reforms after complaints of excessive force, is also hoping to strengthen community-police ties.

Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America is a multiplatform public media initiative that provides a deeper understanding of the impact of poverty on American society. Major funding for this initiative is provided by the JPB Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Ford Foundation.
