Attack on Rutherford Synagogue Labeled Attempted Murder

Someone had thrown at least one Molotov cocktail through the window of an Orthodox synagogue while a rabbi and his family slept inside.

Early this morning, residents in a Rutherford neighborhood woke up to a commotion near the Temple Beth El synagogue. According to authorities, someone had thrown at least one Molotov cocktail through the second floor window of the Orthodox synagogue while Rabbi Nossan Schuman, his wife and five children slept inside.

No one was seriously injured in what officials say was a small fire, although the Rabbi reportedly received some minor burns putting out the fire. Police say they are treating this as an attempted murder.

Police are not yet saying that this incident is in any way related to a number of other anti-Semitic incidents in Bergen County, including a suspicious fire at a Temple in Paramus earlier this month.
