Atlantic County prosecutor resigns amid ethics complaints, lawsuits

Tyner was sworn in as the county’s first Black prosecutor in 2017

Atlantic County prosecutor Damon Tyner has resigned amid multiple ethics complaints and pending lawsuits. His resignation letter did not explain his reasons for leaving; the state attorney general’s office investigated whether Tyner lied to the public and retaliated against a whistleblower, among other allegations.

Tyner, who also faced lawsuits from three high-ranking female employees, was sworn in as the county’s first Black prosecutor in 2017 under then-Gov. Chris Christie. First assistant prosecutor Cary Shill has taken over as acting prosecutor.
