Newark community organizer discusses issues impacting the city’s residents

The live part of the American Cities Rebuilding virtual conference has ended, but NJ Spotlight News will continue to post recordings of its discussions and films in the coming days and weeks. The conference — held Oct. 15-16 and hosted by WNET, NJTV and NJ Spotlight News — examined how cities in New Jersey and nationwide are faring during the COVID-19 pandemic and at a time of social unrest.

In this “5-minutes with” mini-profile, Maria Lopez-Nuñez, Deputy Director of organizing and advocacy for the Ironbound Community Corporation, discusses how she got to Newark, the organization’s work, and the law she helped get passed.

Lopez-Nuñez was featured in the new documentary film, The Sacrifice Zone, about the Ironbound community’s fight for environmental justice. The film and a panel discussion including Lopez-Nuñez aired on NJTV last week, and can be viewed again at the Montclair Film Festival through Oct. 25.
