Activists rally against proposed gas-powered plants

Advocates gathered near railroad tracks in Ridgefield Park Tuesday to both remember the tragic oil train accident that killed 47 people in Quebec six years ago and to underscore their opposition to two new gas-power plants proposed for the Meadowlands.

The protesters, from several different environmental groups, claim that trains transporting volatile Bakken crude oil on CSX trains through Bergen, Hudson and Essex Counties pose unacceptable risks of derailment, and that the power plants would worsen regional air pollution.
