A shark, a bear and Mickey Mouse — annual sandcastle contest returns in Belmar

The contest was canceled last year because of the pandemic

The 34th annual New Jersey Sand Castle Contest went off without a hitch Wednesday in Belmar. Using the sand as their canvas, contestants worked with just about every tool imaginable, creating a cheeseburger-eating shark, a massive Mickey Mouse and a napping polar bear. The event was free and judges evaluated entries for creativity, resourcefulness, originality and accessories.

The Kriska family won first place in the 16 and up category for a sandcastle depicting a woman floating on a raft. The Bikini Boys from Seaside Heights won “Best On the Beach” for their “Finding Nemo” sculpture, complete with a full set of shark teeth.
