94-year-old mayor’s wellness campaign aims to keep residents active

Tinton Falls Mayor Vito Perillo’s Wellness Campaign aims to encourage borough employees to exercise and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Perillo, who is 94 years old, is a World War II veteran who took office last year. He said he got the idea from watching “The Biggest Loser”.

Throughout the campaign employees are given free membership to Soul Focus where they can work out as often as they like, attend classes, meet with a nutritionist to discuss their diet and receive a medical assessment.

Healthy People 2020 indicates physical inactivity increases with age. By 75 to 84 years old, about 45% of adults engage in no leisure-time physical activity.

Although the mayor admits he’s got good genes, he insists his routine workouts keep him strong. He plans to keep on moving, and continue to encourage employees and residents to do the same.
