$500 tax rebate checks in the mail, starting Friday

Roughly 760,000 households across the state will be eligible

Checks for a $500 tax rebate were in the mail Friday for some of roughly 760,000 eligible households across the state, as part of a deal Gov. Phil Murphy reached with lawmakers last year in exchange for increased taxes on millionaires.

Couples with income below $150,000 and who have at least one dependent child qualify, along with individuals who make less than $75,000 a year and have at least one dependent child. The rebate is based on 2020 tax returns and will be reaching voters’ pockets just months before Murphy and all 120 legislators are up for reelection in November.
