GOP Heat for Senator Who Switched Parties, Joined Democrats

Dawn Marie Addiego of Burlington County announced her decision Monday saying, ‘the party which once echoed the vision of Ronald Reagan no longer exists’

Reactions broke down largely along party lines the day after Dawn Marie Addiego, a state senator from South Jersey, announced unexpectedly that she was crossing the aisle and joining the Democratic majority.

“You get elected to represent the people that vote for you,” said state Republican Committee Chair Doug Steinhardt. “And the majority of voters down there elected her, believing her to be one person, and now I think she’s indicated she may feel that she’s someone else.”

Her new party boss welcomed her as a friend. “She’s a very, very moderate Republican and someone that I know cares about the people greatly, and I think she fits within our party very well,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney, a Camden County Democrat.

Her switch — which she explained saying “the party which once echoed the vision of Ronald Reagan no longer exists” — gives Democrats a 26-14 majority in the Senate with a battle royal over the budget looming.
