The federal monitor of the Newark Police Department said the department has “done something that almost no city police department has done under a consent decree. They have completed, in a two-year period, all the policies required by the consent decree. Most police departments fight with the monitor in the first year and a half. Newark didn’t do that.”
In an interview on NJTV, the federal monitor Peter Harvey said there has been progress on the provision of body cameras and car cameras. And, he said, work is now being done to improve training.
But Harvey — the former state attorney general — said the department needs to improve data gathering, community engagement, and how it responds to domestic violence calls.
