Pro-immigrant activists are rallying behind a Rutgers University student who has been summoned by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) to a meeting with deportation officers next month.
Carimer Andujar, president of UndocuRutgers, is a “Dreamer,” one of the young undocumented immigrants who — under the terms of the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy — were given a reprieve from the threat of deportation. Last November she led a campaign to make Rutgers a “sanctuary campus.”
The 21-year-old Andujar came to New Jersey from the Dominican Republic at age 4. She posted a comment online yesterday, saying, “Because of this kind of outpouring of support, including from political leaders and unions, the threat of deportation has almost certainly lifted through the renewal of my DACA papers … We still aren’t completely sure why ICE has targeted me but we are working with local officials to find out. It’s important to remember this might be a bureaucratic error.”
