The Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, a project of the state Juvenile Justice Commission and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, has been deployed now in 17 New Jersey counties. The project, which calls for finding ways to reduce youth incarcerations through alternatives like electronic monitoring and programming, has reduced juvenile detentions in 17 New Jersey counties by 60 percent since 2002.

Even more important, readmission to the system due to parole violations has been reduced by 71 percent. According to the state Juvenile Justice Commission, 82 percent of these juvenile cases are now considered “successful.”
