District 22 includes 11 communities in Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties: Clark, Dunellen, Fanwood, Green Brook, Linden, Middlesex, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Winfield.
Voter registration is 42 percent Democratic and 13 percent Republican, with the rest mostly unaffiliated. Democrats control this district.
Only one incumbent, Assemblyman Jerry Green, is seeking re-election. He is running with James Kennedy, former mayor of Rahway. Assemblywoman Linda Stender is retiring after seven terms in the wake of controversy over her husband's use of a charity to demolish a home damaged by Superstorm Sandy and his attempt to get the nonprofit to help build a larger house to replace it.
The Republican ticket features William "Bo" Vastine of Scotch Plains and William H. Michelson of Plainfield.
