District 22 includes 11 communities in Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties: Clark, Dunellen, Fanwood, Green Brook, Linden, Middlesex, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Winfield.
Voter registration is 41 percent Democratic and 13 percent Republican, with the rest mostly unaffiliated.
Democrats control this district. Only Assemblyman Jerry Green, a business consultant from Plainfield, is seeking re-election. Assemblywoman Linda Stender, a former mayor of Fanwood and former Union County freeholder, is retiring after seven terms due to controversy over her husband's use of a charity to demolish a home damaged by Superstorm Sandy and his attempt to get the nonprofit to help build a larger house to replace it. Green is running with James J. Kennedy of Rahway.
The Republican ticket features William "Bo" Vastine of Scotch Plains and William H. Michelson of Plainfield.
