District 20 encompasses four communities in Union County: Elizabeth, Hillside, Roselle and Union.
This is one of a handful of districts in which Democrats are actually in the majority, outnumbering even unaffiliated voters. Almost 51 percent of those registered are Democrats and just 7 percent are Republicans.
District 20 features one of most contested primary races in the state.
Incumbent Democratic Assembly members Annette Quijano, a municipal prosecutor from Elizabeth who joined the Assembly in 2008, and Jamel Holley, who is the director of public works in Irvington and was named to the lower house earlier this year, face two other tickets. Jorge A. Batista of Hillside and Vivian Bell of Union are running together. The other ticket includes A. Tony Monteiro of Elizabeth and Giuliano A. Farina of Union.
Two Republicans, Stephen E. Kozlovich of Union and Roger Stryeski of Roselle, are unopposed.
