Yo Christie, Did You Hear What The Next Mayor of Philly Said About You?

Matt Katz | May 20, 2015

Philadelphia Councilman Jim Kenney, riding a wave of support from traditional union political bosses and a progressive coalition of young voters, handily defeated several opponents to secure the Democratic nomination for mayor Tuesday. In this overwhelmingly Democratic city, he is expected to cruise to victory in the general election in the fall.

If and when that happens, he will likely have to deal with the governor of the state across the Delaware River that makes us a large swath of Philadelphia suburbs -- Gov. Chris Christie. Officials of adjacent governments work together on policing issues, counter-terrorism measures and accidents, like the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia last week as it approached New Jersey.

The Kenney-Christie relationship will be an interesting one to watch. Because back in December Christie, a Dallas Cowboys fan, showed up in Philadelphia with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to watch the Cowboys deafeat the Philadelphia Eagles. Kenney -- who was not a mayoral candidate at the time -- was furious, and he unleashed a barage of foul-mouthed smack talk against Christie over Twitter:

  • Go home. Take the state helicopter! Creep!
  • Hey fat assed Christie, kiss Jerry Jones' ass in his box in Dallas. Not across the river from Philly! You are just a creep!
  • Chris Christie is sitting on his very fat ass next to Jerry Jones in his box at the Linc. You suck! Kissing Texas ass for 2016! Awful!

Kenney never apologized, but this did not hurt Kenney's standing among Eagles-loving Philadelphia voters. When Kenney was asked about it at a mayoral debate, he said: "It's Twitter. 140 characters of nonsense."

Christie dismissed Kenney like this when asked about the tweets on his call-in radio show on 101.5 FM: "First of all, who? He's gotta get somebody besides his parents to know who he is."
