District 27 encompasses 14 communities in Essex and Morris counties: Caldwell, Chatham Township, East Hanover, Essex Fells, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding, Livingston, Madison, Maplewood, Millburn, Roseland, South Orange and West Orange.
The district swings “blue,” with 37 of those registered Democrats, 22 percent Republicans, and most of the rest unaffiliated.
Three Democrats represent the 27th in Trenton and all are seeking re-election. If re-elected Sen. Richard Codey, of Roseland, who served as governor from November 2004 to January 2006, would begin his fifth decade in the Legislature, having been first elected to the Assembly in 1974 and moving up to the Senate 31 years ago. Assemblyman John McKeon, also of West Orange, is an attorney who joined the lower house in 2002. Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, of South Orange, is a former member of the South-Orange-Maplewood Board of Education who is in her eighth term in the Assembly.
Opposing them are three Republicans. Lee Holtzman, a Livingston attorney, who was unsuccessful in an Assembly bid two years ago and now seeks the Senate seat. Running for the Assembly are Angelo Tedesco, a firefighter and former East Hanover councilman, and Laura Ali, a small business owner and former Chatham Township committeewoman.
