District 10 encompasses 10 Jersey Shore communities in Ocean County: Bay Head, Brick, Island Heights, Lakehurst, Lavallette, Manchester, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights and Toms River.
The district leans “red, “with 28 percent of voters registered as Republicans, 20 percent as Democrats, and most of the rest unaffiliated.
The district is represented by three Republicans, all of whom are seeking re-election. Sen. James Holzapfel of Toms River is a lawyer finishing his second decade in the Legislature, most of that in the Assembly. Assemblymen Dave Wolfe of Brick is a professor at Ocean County College who has served in the lower house since 1992. Completing his first term as in the Assembly, Gregory McGuckin is an attorney who lives in Toms River.
Three Democrats are looking to unseat the incumbents. John Bendel is a retired newspaper editor and Island Heights councilman seeking the Senate seat. Running for Assembly are Susan Kane, of Whiting, a retired accountant who volunteers distributing food and school supplies to children and families, and Amber Gesslein, an adjunct professor of politics and government at Ocean County College and a committeewoman in Brick.
