Why does it seem that every time New Jersey is given a number 1 ranking, it’s a dubious honor. This time it's that New Jersey has the highest auto repair costs in the nation, according to CarMD, which says it derived the rankings using a database of more than 160,000 repairs last year.

New Jersey saw a 21 percent increase in labor rates and 8.2 percent increase in the cost of parts, and shot up the annual rankings from being listed as number 10 last year. The average cost of a car repair was $392.99 ($256.28 for parts, $136.71 for labor).

One positive note: New Jersey paid the least to replace a hybrid car’s battery, an average of $2,005.05, compared with Arizona’s high of $4,409.94.
