New Jersey has one of the highest proportions of women living with HIV/AIDs in the United States, at 35 percent, according to the state Department of Health. About one-third of all new adolescent cases of HIV/AIDs are female, and most were exposed by heterosexual transmission. Among new diagnoses, 86 percent are minorities and 23 percent report being infected by an intravenous drug user.

Currently, 59 percent of New Jersey women living with HIV/AIDS are 20-49 years old.
