Candidates for governor in 2013 have already raised $2.37 million for the election, almost all of it by Gov. Chris Christie, according to campaign finance reports filed with the state’s Election Law Enforcement Commission. As of December 31, 2012 Christie had raised $2.1 million to Democratic State Sen. Barbara Buono’s $214,000. Four other candidates, three of which list themselves as Democrats, have raised about $17,000 total.
Christie has already announced he will not participate in the state’s Gubernatorial Public Financing Program for the primary. Under the program, candidates who raise $380,000 can obtain up to $3.5 million in public funds for the primary. Candidates receive $2 for every $1 they raise after the first $122,000. Buono says she will participate in the primary program.
